It's a supremely thrilling sports sedan with few compromises. Based on the recently redesigned 3-series sedan, the new 2021 BMW M3 successfully resurrects the nameplate's storied driver engagement. BMW shows its commitment to that sentiment by continuing to provide a manual transmission, at least on the regular model. The 2021 M3 Competition further highlights the sports sedan's performance potential with track-ready hardware that should terrify rivals such as the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio and Mercedes-AMG C63. The new M3 impressed us so much that we gave it an Editors' Choice award for 2021. We also fell in love with the satisfying shifts of the manual gearbox, and we were just as pleased with the engine's tenacious acceleration. The M3's infotainment system runs through a 12.3-inch touchscreen that's primarily manipulated via a rotary knob and buttons on the center console. The BMW M3 has always been a hero car. It began with the original 1986 M3 that BMW built to satisfy the production-car homologation rules of a German race car series. Enthusiast buyers loved it, and have ever since. Flash-forward some 35 years and we've arrived at the redesigned 2021 BMW M3. Based on the latest 3 Series sedan that came out for 2019, this new M3 fits the more recent M3 theme: It's a practical daily driver with plenty of performance capability to support recreational track use. Put your foot in it and the M3 becomes ridiculously rapid. Big speeds just ambush you. Any significant right-ankle extension has you riding ahead on a colossal wave of torque. There's heroic grip when going around turns too. And yet this new M3 is a major upgrade over the old one. It's outrageously fast, yet it also inspires confidence when approaching its limits and gives you plenty of sedan-based practicality. Most 3-Series sedans are conservative. Not so the wild M3. There is one crucial element with the tested 2021 BMW M3 that ties it all together for me: the 6-speed manual transmission. The M3 isn't a sport sedan it's, the sport sedan. BMW's iconic performance car is a legend, one that's earned global fanfare and once set the benchmark for an entire segment. From the original E30 onward, BMW has evolved the M3, increasing its performance with each generation. The M3 legend continues with more power and performance than ever before. BMW says the M3 will hit 60 mph time in 4.1 seconds, on to a top speed of 180 mph. The M3 has always been quick and thrilling, but its latest iteration transcends into a new performance bracket.
