Regardless of what's under its high hood, the 2022 BMW X7 has gobs of upscale content and high-tech features as well as an interior that's as quiet as a library but both comfier and ritzier, making it an Editors' Choice winner. Those who want the mightiest X7 will appreciate the Alpina XB7. The version BMW had us drive around a tight racetrack boasted astonishing acceleration and demonstrated surprising poise. Borrowing partially from the smaller BMW X5 SUV and partially from the upscale 7-series, the X7's rich interior is well-appointed, tech-packed, and spacious. Every X7 is loaded with high-tech features, including a fully digital gauge cluster and a large 12.3-inch touchscreen that dominates the dashboard. Its infotainment system can also be operated by a large rotary knob on the center console as well as through gesture controls. Alpina is to BMW what Maybach is to Mercedes-Benz. The company takes a high-end BMW and tunes it for more power, adds more luxury, improves the ride quality, and tweaks exterior components for a more distinctive look. In this case, the X7, BMW's big three-row SUV, gets the Alpina treatment and becomes the XB7. In addition to the improved power, luxury and looks, the XB7 includes Brembo brakes, rear-wheel steering and an adaptive air suspension. Not to mention blistering acceleration. When we tested it, the 612-horsepower SUV rocketed to 60 mph in just 4.1 seconds, which is on par with many sports cars. The Alpina XB7's performance, opulence and exclusiveness are matched by only a few SUVs. Its closest rival, the Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600, is also quite exclusive. The XB7's turbocharged V8 makes more power than anything else in BMW's lineup, save for the bonkers M8 Competition. Acceleration is blazingly quick (0-60 mph in 4.1 seconds in our testing), and the brakes are powerful enough to slow the XB7 down better than most sports cars. Hows the tech? The Alpina XB7 is loaded with tech, and almost all of it comes as standard equipment. BMW includes a full suite of driver aids, from adaptive cruise control and automatic emergency braking to surround-view cameras and parking sensors. It all works well too. The adaptive cruise holds a tight gap but doesn't tap the brakes constantly like less refined systems. The lane-centering is equally impressive.
