Balancing sporty character and a smooth ride, the base 3-Series impresses while the M3 provides track-ready thrills. All 3-Series models are fun to drive, but the M truly shines. Weekend warriors will find track-ready handling in the M3 lineup. These models dive into corners, dice up esses, and beg to be driven even harder, particularly the Competition models. The M3 features strong standard brakes, and the optional carbon-ceramic versions can withstand laps without overheating. The M3 is powered by a 473-hp turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-6, which is tuned to 503 hp for the M3 Competition. The M3 Competition xDrive is the quickest of the bunch, needing just 3.4 seconds for the 0-60 mph run, while the rear-drive Competition takes 3.8 seconds and the standard M3 clocks in at 4.1 second. Handling is superb. The M3 Competition is a true sport sedan, with lots of grip and very little roll in corners. the M3 Competition is surprisingly comfortable given its capabilities. In Comfort mode, the adaptive dampers help prevent the sport-tuned suspension and narrow tire sidewalls from making the M3's ride too harsh. How's the interior? There are small touches everywhere, from the center stack and touchscreen, both canted toward the driver, to the excellent seat positioning, to let you know that BMW thinks of the driver as the most important person in the M3's cabin.
